Friday, May 3

This cartoon is saying how while everyone else is getting pay cuts, the government people are getting raises.  It is an unfair system that is favoring the government rather than the people. The lady to the right is a waitress. The second man is a mechanic. The third lady is some other type of profession (secretary maybe) while the last guy is the government worker. This cartoon is against government workers since they make him look so sleazy and say he still got a pay raise.

Thursday, April 11

This cartoon is all about how North Korea is threatening to launch a nuclear attack at the United States, but their missile wouldn't do anything to us (not even make it here).  The leg represents the United States.  The little guy represents Kim Jong-Un.  Kim Jong-un is so small since he can't do any damage while we could completely destroy them!

The white smoke from the vatican means a new pope has been elected which has just happened within the last few days.  This cartoon has the white smoke coming from the white house though and one guy is saying how it is probably just Obama burning through more of our money.  It is saying how we are in such a bad economy, yet Obama keeps spending money and it is comparing the white smoke to the new pope (Francis).  This artist might think we need a change in power.

Overall Analysis of Obama and Totalitarianism:

Obama can seem very much like a dictator.  Obama came into Presidency when our nations economy was bad.  He promised that he could change the economy and make it better.  Also, some people think he is trying to gain more power than the Republican party and trying to demolish the congress' input and power.  He also grew up poor (mother was a student and father left).  Obama was too young to serve in the military, though.  He is working on changing some laws (bearing arms).  Obama is missing some key factors of being a dictator, though.  He does not use secret police.  Also, Obama does not blame other countries for our issues or pursue more territory. He did not participate in the military and was educated well.  As you can see, it is pretty well split.  I believe he has the potential to be one.

Political Cartoon:

The lady represents most of the careless American population.  The paper and stand represent the voting booth and the voting ballot.  The artist added American Idol on the ballot since most Americans care more about that kind of thing over their own government.  The artist drew the lady like that to show us how trashy and careless our nation is starting to look.

Political Cartoons

The man walking on the guys backs are Hitler.  The guys bending over are the leaders of the people who were just letting him go around the Treaty of Versailles.  This cartoon shows how all of the Democratic leaders just let Hitler take control.  No one stopped the disobeying of the Treaty of Versailles; they all just let him just keep disobey the treaty.  Hitler walked all over the democratic leaders backs seeing how far they'd let him go over the Treaty of Versailles.

J.A. How do you determine what is 'significant' in history?

You have to look at what impact it had on today's society.  Also, if there are a lot of causalities.  Another way to tell is if there are no other things that happened like it.  For example, Battle of Gettysburg was significant since it turned toward the North (made the U.S. free slaves).  Also, many lives were lost. -- If that battle didn't happen, how would the world be different?

The newest independent countries are in the northern part of Asia (the newest country in the world is South Sudan and 2nd newest is East Timor) .

Most of this area has a Semi-Presidential Republic and became independent in 1990-1999.  Also, they are in a difficult situation with freedom of the press.

What questions do you have about these maps?  (Did you question anything?)
Not really. (Why would they list Russia as a new country .. Soviet Union broke up in 1991 and became its own country.)

J.A. Are humans good or bad by human nature?

Humans are good by nature.  By birth, we are innocent.  Also, we naturally do good things for people.  When people are in trouble, our first instinct is to help them.  People also just do kind gestures, like holding doors open, for each other.
